Proper Pied-à-Terre: A 1,646-square-foot condo at the Austin Proper
Condominium renovationAustin, TexasPublished Updated
Proper Pied-à-Terre is a 1,646-square-foot condo in the Residences at the Austin Proper, downtown. It’s the third project for the same clients, after Clarksville. At this scale, every decision had to carry full weight.
The brief
The clients are empty nesters who had recently married. The condo was beautiful but lacked character. “The homeowners wanted a home that was purposeful, a home they could fully experience,” Mark Cravotta told Rue. “They prioritize artistry and craftsmanship.” They wanted something small, eclectic and considered.
Scope
Interiors throughout: wallcoverings, furniture, lighting, art and custom pieces, including the dining table and the nightstands in both bedrooms.
The design
Almost everything came from independent artisans and boutique ateliers, chosen for how things were made as much as how they look. A marble end table in the living space was made by hand by a Brazilian artisan.
Cravotta designed the dining table and the nightstands in both bedrooms. Phillip Jeffries wallcoverings ground the main rooms.
Antique pieces sit alongside contemporary ones without apology. An antique bar cart the owner inherited shares the home with a Kelly Wearstler light fixture in the kitchen. Seating is generous, and each area is surrounded by art.
At this scale, there’s nowhere to hide a weak decision. Everything here earned its place.
